Demonstrate it live. Pick a concept, use a simple everyday analogy, avoid jargon and check for understanding. Interviewers are testing communication as much as knowledge.

Example answer

"Take an API. I'd say it's like a waiter in a restaurant: you don't go into the kitchen yourself, you tell the waiter what you want, they pass the order to the kitchen and bring back your food. An API does the same thing between two pieces of software. Then I'd check whether that made sense and adjust the analogy to what they care about — for example, how their weather app gets its forecast."
